Yvonne Black (nee McClendon) was born on September 23, 1957, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Robert and Gertrude McClendon. She grew up in Evanston where she developed many lifelong friendships and a reputation for having a talent in hairstyling.
Yvonne was formally educated in Cincinnati Public Schools and graduated from Withrow High School in 1975, then went on to Moore Hair University to follow her passion and pursue a career in cosmetology. She was an award-winning stylist, a platform artist for Ultra Sheen, and was consistently in demand at salons such as Shic, Touch of Class, Sheer Madness, Les Cheveux.
In 1981, Yvonne and Mark Black gave birth to their son, Brandon Black before a brief marriage that began in June of 1982. She was a proud and supportive mother who lovingly referred to her only child as her “greatest achievement.”
In 1992, she realized her dream of opening her own salon called “My Cousin’s Place. She had a special gift of making women feel and look their best. After years of decades of doing hair, she took a break from it and worked at American Airlines for almost 10 years before pursuing a new career in massage therapy, earning an Associate’s degree from Antonelli in 2010. Her last job was as a parking lot attendant for the Horseshoe Casino. Her hobbies were traveling, playing bingo, going to the casino, dancing, cooking, and playing cards. She was also an avid Bengals fan. Most of all she loved spending time with family and friends.
Yvonne joined New Hope Baptist Church at an early age, under the late Rev. J.M. Stephen. She remained a faithful member to Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She went home to be with her Heavenly Father on October 18, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones at University Hospital.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert Jr. and Rodney.
Yvonne (aka Vonnie, Von, Hawaii 50) leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted and loving son, Brandon (Marian); sister, Vicki (Willis); granddaughter Ellery (4); best friend, Elizabeth (Scott) and godson, Jimmy; nieces, Kelly, Robin and Paige; nephews, Nathan, Jaron and Ravllo; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
