Douglas L. Sloan…Celebrating His Spirit
“Hello!” A friendly, funny, familiar greeting recognizable to anyone who had the privilege of knowing Douglas Sloan… a proud and much-loved son of Cincinnati from June 8, 1947, until July 25, 2023.
He was born to father, Lambert “Lamb” and mother, Julia “Juju” Sloan. He was also the youngest brother of Ken and Darryl Sloan, all of whom passed on in life ahead of him, and the beloved nephew of Grace and Ruth Sloan. All of his close-knit, immediate family have welcomed Douglas to heaven to be with them.
Douglas attended Samuel Ach Junior High School and was a 1965 graduate of Hughes High School (now Hughes STEM High School), where he thrived in math and science. He was also known as “Mr. Social,” who “always” made friends and enjoyed life.”
Following high school graduation, he attended Ohio’s only HBCU, Central State University in Wilberforce. Upon leaving Wilberforce, he was hired by The Procter & Gamble Co., where he built an illustrious career as an Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Technician.
On July 14, 1971, Douglas took the hand of the love of his life, high-school sweetheart Phyllis Sloan, and made her his wife. In turn, 15 years later, she’d make him a proud father of son, Darryl Sloan.
Douglas was a loving and caring parent who was always attentive to the needs of his son and engaged in his many activities. He was also a diehard sports fan, rooting for The Bengals and The Reds, but his favorite athlete ever was his son…Darryl. Douglas coached his baseball team and showed up for every football and hockey game.
Of course, Douglas would tell anyone who’d give him an ear that having and raising Darryl was his greatest accomplishment in life. He was always there for him when needed and always tried to advise and encourage his son to be himself. He attended Zion Baptist Church with his family before moving his membership to New Prospect Baptist Church nearly 10 years ago. He was a treasured funeral attendant of Renfro Funeral Services, Inc. for more than 20 years and a long-standing member of The Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Sloan; his son, Darryl Sloan, along with his beautiful wife Sydney and Doug’s first grandchild, Vivian Grace. His memory will also be forever cherished by his nephew, Khalil Abdus-Saboor (aka Kevin Sloan), sister-in-law, Daphne Sloan Morgan and a community of friends.
Douglas was blessed with an amazing sense of humor — “hello”! —was always his signature greeting. A life-long music enthusiast, Douglas was a voracious hip-hop fan, tuned-in from the moment Grandmaster Flash sent out “The Message” to when Jay-Z later issued a very “Public Service Announcement.”
So, it should come as no surprise, Douglas was known to family, friends, and other loved ones near and far as “Doug E. Fresh,” another unforgettable all-time great. His love of music was passed down to his son Darryl, who can be found spinning vinyl late into the evening, these days with a bottle of milk and beautiful newborn., Vivian Grace, in hand. His first reaction upon seeing Vivian was “pure excitement and joy. He was so proud and could not stop looking at pictures of her and smiling.
Today that needle drops in honor of Douglas, a devout Baptist, as Darryl cues the Doug E. Fresh classic ‘All the Way to Heaven.”
