Obituary

Sunrise began on July 1, 1929 for Virginia Simmons, who was born to the union of Emma and Richard Lewis.  God called her home on December 9, 2023.

Virginia grew up in Cincinnati and attended Cincinnati Public Schools.  Virginia was baptized and spent her early years attending First Baptist Church of Cumminsville.  She moved her membership years later to Bible Way Church of God In Christ, where Virginia made sure that Jesus Christ was the center point in the lives of herself, her children and grandchildren.

Virginia was a dedicated nursing assistant and food-service worker at Amity Convalescent Home, Lincoln Crawford Nursing Home and Westside Heath Care retirement homes, serving those who could not care for themselves for 40 years.   Everyone loved "Miss Virginia", for she believed a cup of hot tea and prayer would heal anything.  After retirement and health problems, Virginia returned to First Baptist, where she continued to bring her fire for The Lord every time she entered the room.  She was a faithful believer of the 100th Psalms; Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord, Serve the Lord with Gladness, Enter into His Gates with Thanksgiving and his courts with Praise."  She was a loving, nurturing mother and grandmother.

Virginia was also a hairdresser, cook and seamstress for all her family and many others.

She was preceded in death by her two children; Joyce Ann Simmons and Michael Simmons; her siblings, Robert Lewis, Gordon Lewis, Paul Lewis, Rose Engleman, Lucille Shackleford, Bartha Howard, Sylvia Mitchell and Alice Lewis.

Left to cherish her everlasting memory: sons, George Simmons Jr. (Charlene), Gary Simmons, Jacob Simmons, Glenn Simmons, Andre Simmons (Juanita Brown) and Lawrence Simmons (Pamela English); daughter, Ima Hadassah Israel; 19 grandchildren, Charles Bailey, Francis Wheeler, Amberly Simmons-Yett (James Yett), LaKisha Simmons, Ashley Simmons, Kevin Simmons, Keith Simmons, Andre Hill, Michael English, Adrienne Smith, Shirri Hill, Michael Sanders, Morse Sanders, Courtney Cook, Kendra Simmons Baker (Tony), Johnathan Simmons, Dante English, Monique English and Kahlia English; 45 great grandchildren; eleven great great grandchildren and a host of others who loved her and will miss her.
