Celebrating Her Spirit
Sally E. Leek was born on February 1, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio to Ann and Ted Colman. She departed this life on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 into the arms of The Lord.
Sally, an only child, grew in Cleveland, Ohio, where she attended public school. After graduating from high school, Sally moved to Lansing Michigan, where she met her future husband James Leek Sr. The couple, who married in 1952, were blessed with three children, Terry, James Leek Jr. and John Shunk.
Sally, a military wife, raised her children was a firm, loving hand. She maintained an orderly household, where there was a place for everythingв?¦and everything had to be in place. The Leek family moved from Lansing, MI to Cincinnati in the early 1960's, settling in Cincinnati's West End community. The family later moved to Avondale.
Once in Cincinnati, Sally decided it was time for her to start her career. She was first hired as an operator at Cincinnati Bell. She then went to work for the former Shillitos Department store, where she started in the deli. Sally was then promoted as a wine buyer, a position that allowed her to travel and to learn the art of wine tasting under the guidance of Mr. Lazarus, himself. She became of the store's top wine buyers, a position she truly treasured until she retired.
Retirement, however, did not agree with Sally, who loved to be active.
She returned to work, landing a job as a "handler" for Brinks. Had she not been laid off at the age of 77, she would have worked until her health failed. Sally, an avid reader, also enjoyed listening to jazz, working cross-word puzzles and watching her favorite team, The Cleveland Indians. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sr. and her son, John "Jack" Shunk.
Her loving spirit will forever be cherished by her son, James (Linda) Leek Jr. and daughter, Terry Leek; six grandchildren, James Leroy Leek, Marqeta Colvard, Colby Gaines, Nicole Miles, Kidada Leek and Greg Smith; her favorite sister-in-law Emogene (Charlie) Leek and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends.
