Obituary

A Time to be Born : Ruthie was born on January 5, 1937, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Olden McGivens and Florence Mae (Alford) McGivens.  She was the second child born to this union.

A Time to Grow : Ruthie lived the first nine years of her life in Cincinnati's West End on Gest Street. In October 1946, the family moved to Columbia Township where she attended Madeira Public Schools until she graduated. During her years at Madeira, she was active in the Girls Athletic Association (GAA) and was on the track team with her childhood friend, Rosetta (Greene) Martin. During one of their track meets, their team ran the 4x100 meter relay against Lincoln Heights and defeated them. During the summer months she kept busy playing softball, berry picking (to earn money), fishing and swimming with the neighborhood children. When Ruthie was thirteen, Ruthie accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Oakley under the pastorate of Rev. C.C. Wright. She later became a Deacon at Carmel Presbyterian Church. As she progressed in her professional career Ruthie, worked various jobs but her heart went to working with United Way where her time was spent as a home health aide. She retired in 1994.

A Time to Love : She met the love of her life at a St. Joseph dance one Sunday night, Paul C. Turner.  They were married in 1957 and their love blossomed, and they had three children. Ruthie was a loving wife and mother, and she loved her family it was very important to her. Ruthie's hobbies: she loved gardening, her houseplants, collecting craft books and working on various projects. Her favorite pastimes were watching PBS, MSNBC and CNN. She loved to talk politics especially civil rights and the importance of voting.

A Time to Mourn : Ruthie will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; son, Richard K.; her parents, and her brother, Calvin McGivens. She leaves many to cherish her memory to include her children: Paul C. Turner Jr. (Roxana) and Tracy Turner-Maupin (Walter); honorary daughter, Laverne Williams; honorary son, Edward Currie; her four grandchildren, Jolice Turner (Joey), special grandson, Brandon Maupin, Ryan Maupin, and Paul Gabriel Turner; two honorary granddaughters Kamiya Casey (Brent), and Asha Ward; her nine great-grandchildren, her brothers and sisters Robert, Mary, Eliga McGivens, and Thelma Ellington; special acknowledgement to her friends, Rose Martin and Mary Francis Davis, Ron and Norma Richardson, and Oscar (Scobe) Wright as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
