Mr. Nathaniel "Sip/Jack" Jackson was born on February 28, 1929 and finished his work on earth on January 13, 2015.
Nathaniel grew up with his mother, Rosetta Jackson and father Sylvester Porter in Louisville, Miss. , thereby earning the nickname "Sip" and "Jack." He moved to Cincinnati with his grandparents, Thomas and Irene Jackson at a young age. Sip was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea as a gunner, during which he earned a Bronze Star for bravery. Following his return to the U.S., he began working for the Kuempel Company, all the while developing his talent to create hand- crafted jewelry in a unique African- American style. By 1960, Sip had found his creative voice as a craftsman and photographer. He worked for Hi-Lites Magazine, earning a well-known reputation in the Cincinnati nightlife/Jazz scene. During his photography career, he enjoyed the company of the most famous and important musicians, artist and political figures of the era. While continuing his role as photographer, he also partnered with is life-long friend Mary Kent and opened the Thatched Roof, located on Reading Road in Avondale.
The "Shop" later moved to East McMillian, where it remained until it closed its doors in 2011.
During that time Sip won numerous awards for his unique creations and as a long- term, African American Cincinnati businessman. His creative skills as a jeweler attracted a variety of customers, ranging from Bootsy Collins (who still wears his pieces) to Randy Crawford. He was a thoughtful, introspective man, blessed with a wonderful sense of humor. Although he was not overly talkative, when he did have something to say "everyone" listened to his words of wisdom. He was a loving, family man who always put his family first.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosetta Porter grandmother, Irene Jackson and grandfather, Thomas Jackson. Nathaniel leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Niama Jackson and son, Shelton (Janet) Jackson of Harrisburg, PA.; sister, Lola Porter (Steve) Lipscombe of Brookhaven, Miss; step-daughter, Rae Jean Mayo; special cousin special cousin, Arthur Lee (Donna) Hemmingway; grandchildren, Aris, Erin, Khalil, Nathaniel, and Alexandra Brittany Mayo, Avion Mayo, Jaheem Mayo. Nathaniel maintained the most loving and wonderful relationship with his two former wives, Bessie Ruth Jackson (former Mosley) and Darlene Jackson (formerly Mayo), both relationships greatly sustained him.
