Mary Naomi Garrett, age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, April 25. She was born in Spartanburg, SC, but moved to Cincinnati, OH at an early age. She attended Tuskegee Institute for two years, graduating from Howard University with a BA in Sociology in 1946. She also attended the University of Cincinnati, University of Kentucky, University of Michigan, Indiana University, Xavier (Ohio) University, receiving a Master's Degree in Education from Miami University (Ohio) and certification in counseling from Xavier University. She received several honors in Education.
She worked for the War Department during World War II and while attending Howard University. Other government agencies for which she was employed include: the Department of Agriculture, the Air Force, the Post Office, the Unemployment/Employment Office and the Welfare Department before becoming permanently employed as an Elementary Teacher and Instructional Leader for the Cincinnati Public Schools. She retired in 1994, having served 42 years working for the public.
In 1951, she married Leonard Garrett, Jr. To this union were born 8 children, namely: Teri, Marietta, GA; Reggie (Linda) Seattle, WA; Kathy (Audley), Winter Park, FL; Kevin (deceased); Tim, Marietta, GA; Robby, Cincinnati, OH; Lori(Franz), Switzerland; and Patty, Kennesaw, GA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren - Hamadi, Alesia, Harry, Corey, Kyle, Cole, and Nolan. Extended family includes Paula Fontaine, Tamika Spence, Trey and Triana Kellam, all residing in Cincinnati.
After retirement, she relocated to Marietta, GA and later to Winter Park, FL where she lived until death
