Obituary

Kenneth Mordis was born on July 19, 1944, to Lela (Jones) and Mordis Thomas. He departed this life on March 27, 2014 to be with The Lord, after a brief illness. Kenny, the second of six children, grew up in Akron, Ohio and attended Akron Public Schools. He graduated from North High School, Akron, Ohio in 1962. Throughout life and school, Kenny was extremely close...and fiercely competitive with his brother, Richard. He and Richard both played football for North.. However, Kenny served as co-captain of the team. Kenny was voted "Most Respected Student" in his senior year of high school and received numerous coveted awards for academic excellence. In fact, his senior coached asked his mother, "How did she raise a man like that during the turbulent times of the sixties?" Kenny and Richard competed in sports, grades and life. Kenny had an incredible math aptitude. After graduating from college with a degree in accounting, Kenny held management jobs for Model Cities, Firestone and Goodyear in Akron, OH. He moved to Cincinnati to become one of a handful of African -American system analyst/computer programmers at Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company. He wrote and maintained the first 411 Directory in the 1970s. He was known as the "Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes." He was always surrounded by computers at home and taught his family and the neighborhood children how to use them. A close friend of his step-son chose his life career based on the influence Kenny had on him. Kenny re-confirmed his faith in Jesus and was Baptized at Tryed Stone Baptist Church in 1990. His loving brother and competitor, Richard, preceded Kenneth in death on Feb. 28, 2014...nearly a month before The Lord called Kenny. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Lela and Mordis Thomas, and baby brother, Tony. He leaves to cherish his memory wife, Marsha; daughter, Ariel Kendra,(who was born on his birthday); son, Christopher Kenneth ( who also has his perchant for Math); one step-son, Brandon Eugene, whom he raised; one sister, Susan Thomas; two brothers, Robert and Glenn Thomas; one cherished Aunt Jewel Jones; in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
