Obituary

Elizabeth (Rhodes) Carter, affectionately known as 'Libby' was born on December 26, 1938 in Covington, Kentucky. She was the seventh of nine children born to the union of Robert Salle Rhodes and Jessie Rebecca (Johnson) Rhodes. Elizabeth, a devoted daughter, sister, wife, grandmother and friend passed away on June 29, 2025. She was blessed to have spent the last few weeks of her life absolutely surrounded by her loving family.

Elizabeth attended Lincoln-Grant School in Covington, Kentucky where she was raised. She moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1954 when she married her first husband McKinley Pace. They were married until his death in 1969. Never a stranger to hard work, as a young adult Elizabeth held many jobs including a stint at the United States Post Office. She eventually earned her nursing degree and became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1975. Her nursing profession was not just a job, she was a nurse to everyone around her without thought or hesitation.

Above all, she was fiercely devoted to her family. She married Gregory Carter in 1980 and was committed to him until his death in 2018. Elizabeth was a loving mother to ten children and grandmother to many. Anyone who knew her can attest to her sassy, sarcastic sense of humor. She would easily laugh at her own jokes - even if you didn't laugh with her.

She was 'Aunt Libby' to half of the neighborhood and if there was food there was always room for one more at her table.

She had a deep love for music, especially jazz, and could often be found playing one of her many albums or CDs while enjoying a glass of wine or a good rum and coke.

Elizabeth is survived by four daughters, Stephanie (William) Saafir, Tracey (Brian Pollard) Pace, Lisa Pace and Kristen (Gary) Jackson; six sons, Robert (Annette Nakayima) Pace, Lance Pace, Bryan Pace, Anthony Pace, Oba (Stephanie Johnson) Pace and Gary Carter; sisters Vera James and Sandra Springfield and brother Clinton (Rhea) Rhodes. She leaves behind 27 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Also a host of nieces, nephews and other loved ones.

Her loving husband Gregory Carter, special love Frederick Jordan and first husband McKinley Pace all preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death are her parents Robert Rhodes and Jessie (Johnson) Rhodes; her son Terrance Lamar Rhodes; brothers Darwin Crutcher Rhodes, Jesse Rhodes, and Robert Rhodes; and her sisters Marian Harper and Jacqueline Dell.
