IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elaine
Ramsey
August 14, 1945 – November 21, 2024
Elaine Mitchell Ramsey was born on August 14, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, the firstborn daughter to David Lee Mitchell and Evelyn Ruby Mullins, both of whom preceded her in death. Elaine spent her early years in the West End of Cincinnati, Ohio, where she attended Hayes Elementary, Porter Junior High, and graduated from Taft High Night School in 1967.
In 1962, Elaine married Harrison N. Ramsey, and their union was blessed with three children: Bryant, Stephanie, and Darrick. The couple made their home in downtown Cincinnati, residing in the Stanley Roe apartments. Elaine began her career at McAlpin's Department Store, working in the children's department. Her keen eye for fashion and dedication to her role made her a trusted advisor to customers. Though offered a promotion to window dresser, Elaine declined due to the lower pay. Elaine later found her professional calling at Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, where she worked diligently for over 20 years, retiring in 1990.
Elaine's life was filled with love, laughter, and cherished traditions. She was an avid reader, often found with a newspaper in hand or solving crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp. Holidays were marked by her famous potato salad, watergate salad, and an array of delicious treats that became staples of family gatherings. In the 1970s and '80s, Elaine and her siblings hosted vibrant parties, filled with music, dancing, and up to 100 guests, celebrating the joy of family and friendship.
Known affectionately as "Shorty Ram," Elaine loved to sing and dance, with Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire as her favorite artists. Her warmth shone through when she called loved ones, singing Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You," a heartfelt gesture that brought joy to everyone she touched. Saturdays were filled with music, the aroma of breakfast, and a lesson in the importance of a clean home—a value she instilled in her children.
Elaine's sense of humor and radiant smile were highlights of her personality. She was a loyal fan of America's Funniest Home Videos, which brought her weekly laughter and joy.
Elaine was the eldest of six siblings. She is preceded in death by her sister Sheila Mitchell, her son Bryant K. Ramsey, and her niece Kidada Mitchell.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter Stephanie (Rodney) Pierson, her son Darrick Ramsey, siblings Lana Mitchell Monds, Wayne Mitchell, Darryl Mitchell, and Anthony "Tuggie" Mitchell; her grandchildren Jameelah, Brittney (Michael), Rodney Jr., Jennifer, Rachel, Natalie, and Jolie; and her great-grandchildren Mazi, Marquisa, Mael, Alyssa, Michael Jr., Jay Vaughn, and Brielle.
She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces Bianca, Sophia, nephews Omar, Samory, and great-nephews Bobby, Bishop, and Samory II, and great nieces, Candice and Malaysia.
Elaine honored her ancestors and carried their legacy proudly: • Evelyn Ruby Hughes (1930–1989) • Mattie Louise Stripling (1910–1994) • Ollie Polsten (1879–1960) • Savannah Polsten (1851)
Elaine's life was a testament to strength, love, and unwavering dedication to her family. Her legacy of kindness, resilience, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
