Obituary

Carolyn Lavinia Malone (nee Keys) was born on February 24, 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the second daughter of the late Mr. Charles F. Keys of Cincinnati, OH and Mrs. Janet Dumas Keys, of Prairie Alabama. Both of her parents, who were outstanding local educators, preceded her in death here in Cincinnati. She attended Cincinnati Public Schools; Sherman Elementary, Hays Elementary and Walnut Hills High School.  Carolyn was a member of the graduating class of 1963.  She was a member of the Walnut Hills Choir and glee club, and she had private piano lessons at the Cosmopolitan School of Music under the direction of the late Dr. Artie Matthews, composer of the "Weary Blues".   Throughout her entire life she lived in three Cincinnati neighborhoods, Avondale, Madisonville, and Evanston.

Following high school graduation, Carolyn attended Ohio University in Athens for two years and returned to the University of Cincinnati to graduate from the College of Education with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Throughout her life she enjoyed working with the smaller children in public schools and church day care centers.

As a child, Carolyn joined Carmel Presbyterian Church located in the West End at Ninth and Linn Streets. Here she sang in the Choir, worked with children in the Sunday School and   played church hymns on the piano.

Upon returning to the University of Cincinnati from Ohio University in 1968, she met Anthony P. Malone, a student at the college of Arts and Sciences.   They both loved listening to orchestral music and attending live symphony concerts.  They married at Carmel Presbyterian Church in 1973 under the pastorship of the late Rev. Roland C. Wroten.  During their fifty plus years of marriage Carolyn and Anthony had three sons, Anthony Paul Jr, Michael Spencer and Martin Andrew.    Carolyn was a great wife and dedicated mother to her family.

Carolyn worked with children in daycare at Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian, Immanuel Presbyterian, and New Horizons Day Care. After retirement, she also developed an interest in learning to play the flute as an older adult.  She was a member of the AKA sorority in Cincinnati. Carolyn Lavinia passed away in Cincinnati at 8:00 AM on the morning of April 16, 2025.  In addition to her husband, Anthony Sr. and her two sons, Anthony Jr. and Martin, she leaves behind to mourn her passing, her older sister, Janet Benson of Homewood, Illinois; nephews, Carl Benson, Christopher Benson, Ryan Snyder and Ronald Snyder; her grandson, Charles Malone; her sister-in-law, Deborah Snyder of Macedonia; her college roommate, Joan E. Thomas of Atlanta and a host of cousins and friends.
