Viola M. Lindsey was born to the union of William and Pearl Marshall on November 10, 1904 in Mobile, Alabama. "Sista," as she was loving called by family and friends, departed this life on February 24, 2014 surrounded by her family
She grew up in Mobile, Ala., and earned the nickname of "Sista," because she was the oldest daughter of 11 chil-dren. She attended Mobile Public Schools, graduating from Most Pure Heart of Mary High School. She grew up attending Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church with her family. In 1946, she moved from Mobile to Cincinnati to join her sister and daughter. Once in Cin-cinnati, Viola met the love of her life, Robert Lindsey. Robert preceded her in death in the 1950s, after several happy years of marriage.
Viola, who was 109 years young, was spirited and fun-loving throughout her life. She loved to have a good time and enjoyed grocery shopping for her on-going daily diet of greens and sea food. Viola ate greens and fried fish every day. Her other dietary favorites were buttermilk with sugar. The diet blessed her with excellent health. She was never sick or suffered any illness until the last month of her life.
She was an excellent "soul food" cook as well as a seam-stress. Viola made her own clothes (without a pattern) and sewed for the entire family. When she celebrated her 109th birthday, she was featured on Channel 12 news. Viola, who outlived all of her siblings, exercised regularly and could move like a gymnast. An avid dancer, Viola could out dance most of her grandchil-dren-as well as ride a bicycle. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, William and Pearl Marshall; her husband, Robert Lindsey and her 10 siblings.
Her loving, feisty spirit will forever be cherished by her twin daughters, (who are 92 years young) Bertha Gause of Atlanta, Ga. and Bernice Ewing of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, Bettye Lynch (Chris), Doris Parkman (Ronnie), Catherine Calincale, Viola Gilkey, Carolyn W. Taylor (Albert) ; three granddaughters, Gwendolyn Hamm, Hazellla Gause and Barbara Lemons deceased; and a host of great and great-great grandchildren. The sixth genera-tion, "Breann Victoria," who arrived three weeks ago, will treasure the stories about Viola M. Lindsey in the years to come.
