Michele Taylor-Mitchell Obituary

Celebrating Michele's Journey

Michele Antoinette Taylor-Mitchell was a loving, nurturing mother, a devoted grandmother, a fierce warrior for her community and a die-hard friend. This woman, blessed with a warm smile and a giving heart, completed her journey on June 30, 2021.
She was born on Nov. 24, 1950 in Cincinnati to the union of Ann and Irvin Taylor. She grew up in Cincinnati and attended Porter Hays in the West End and Samuel Ach Schools. She graduated from Hughes High School in the early 1970s and enrolled at The University of Cincinnati Ohio. After receiving her B.S. degree from UC, she channeled her "activist" spirit into a long-standing career as a social worker and community volunteer. In the 1980's she married George J. Mitchell.
Michele started her social work career at Seven Hills Neighborhood Services. She later joined The Hamilton County Welfare Department as a caseworker, where she devoted herself to working with the community. She deftly juggled her career with raising her children, Terrie Peter, Ivy Ann, AnaBraden and Joshua. Although her life was full with work and family, she enrolled in Stowe School for mechanics-because she wanted to know how to fix her car!
She was plagued with poor health for several yearsв?¦yet that did not stop her from serving her community. Her many volunteer "jobs," included years devoted as a board member of The Avondale Community Council, a founding advisory member of Avondale Youth Council, advisor of Avondale Choice Neighborhood, Cincinnati Black United Front and The Community Police Partnering Center.
Michele also worked with ACDC, The Millvale Community Council, The Recovery Center and served as an active member of The NAACP, The Cincinnati Urban League, Stonewall, Cincinnati Hamilton County Community Action Agency and The Ohio Empowerment Coalition. She participated on the Cincinnati Policing Collaborative agreement; served as an election poll worker for more than 30 years; board member of Habitant for Humanity, Closing the Health Gap and Organize Ohio.

She was honored by The National Alliance on Mental Illness and recognized for her community work by The Central Clinic of Cincinnati and the Contact Center, where she was a community activist. Michele age gave her life to Christ at a young age and had a strong faith in her belief of God. She attended a host of churches throughout her life, including Bibleway C.O.G.I.C and Morning Star Baptist Church. She was also one of the visionaries for the move of her current church home New Prospect Baptist Church.
She loved to travel and she made it her mission to travel with her grandchildren whenever possible. Being a grandmother was second nature to Michele. And it was important to her for her grandchildren to know who everyone in the family wasв?¦ just like she did. She considered Milan, Tennessee her "roots," and treasured her family eldersв?¦"the old people," as she called them. She made it her business to visit them on special occasions and holidays. She had an unwavering love for her family-the most important thing to her. She was pure hearted, never judgmental and always a good listener.

Michele, who earned a host of loving nicknames over her life, answered to: "Mimi, Grammy, Momma, Aunt MiMi , Cousin Michele, Mickeyshell, Mam and Mickey." She was a sister, friend and confidant to all. She was also a passionate collector of African art and collectibles. She was blessed with artistic talents and enjoyed working with her hands. She loved to paint, make collages and wood working.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ann and Irvin Taylor, her sister Sharon G. Lattimore, her granddaughter Deanna Shearer and special friend Wanda Stallworth.

Her amazing spirit will forever be remembered by her children, Terrie Peter Lee Shearer, Ivy Ann(Kehinde) Babatunde, Anabraden Cohen(Brady) and Joshua Lenear Thorpe-Mitchell; God- daughters, Crissandra Evans (Cherry Pie), Akosua Favors and God- son, Brian Garry; daughter-in-law's Lynda Williams and Pamela Shearer; her siblings, Michael A. Taylor (her Irish twin), Vivian A. (Michael) Oyedele, and George (Charlene) Scott; grandchildren, Terrie II, Leeza, Tearra, Da-vid, Genesis, Tony Wayne, Gabriel Sr., Christopher, Chardonnay, Chennelle, Taylor, Trinity, Jason, Joshua Jr, Haylin and Holland;
Great Grandchildren, Allaysia, Gabriel Jr, Alleycia, Amir, Zyon, Aliya; her oldest cousin, Yvonne R Cook. She will also be dearly missed by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; special long-time friends, Rosalind and John Dubose, Damon Lynch III, Ozie Davis, Iris Roley, Cassandra Barham, Priscilla Woods, Terri Campbell and Claudette Ward.
