Celebrating Her Spirit
Marshalette Freed was born to the union of Hazel and Jay Lee Jennings on February 10, 1948, in Dadeville Alabama. On Saturday, February 7, 2015 she heard the flutter of Angels' wings and answered The Lord's call.
She grew up in Dadeville and graduated from Edward Bell High School. Marshalette, affectionately called " Marsha" by friends and family, furthered her education at Alabama A&M University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Home Economics in 1970. In 1971, she married the love of her life, General A. Freed. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Maronica and Myra. The Freed family lived in 10 states before settling down in Cincinnati, OH in 1988.
Marsha taught Home Economics for more than 20 years before she transitioning to a librarian and Special Education teacher. She was very passionate about teaching young children how to cook, sew and to take care of themselves. Her passion to make a positive difference in her students' lives was shown through her many acts of kindness..from countless prom dresses she made for young girls to volunteering as senior class advisor. Marsha retired from teaching in 2012.
She was an active member of Quinn Chapel AME Church, where she worked on the Scholarship committee for over 17 years. The scholarship committee hosted annual fundraising events to provide scholarships to Quinn's graduating seniors. Marsha was also an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Cincinnati Queen City Alumnae Chapter. Marsha devoted her time to Delta's "Beautillion Militaire Program," one of the sorority's signature events. Marsha was also a founding member of the S.N.O.B.S (strictly no one's business) women's group that met once of month to celebrate one another's birthday. She loved to travel and supported her grandchildren in sports and dance competitions.
Marsha is survived by her husband, General; two daughters, Maronica (Lawrence II) Williams and Myra Freed. She also is survived by three grandchildren; Zuri, Zoe and Lawrence General Williams. She will also be dearly missed by the countless students and friends she has touched throughout her journey.
