Janice Athlee Trice Glaspie was born on March 3, 1951, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Marcella and James A. Trice, Sr. She lived a loving, caring, and energetic life that focused on family and community enrichment.
Always involved in the community, Janice was a leader in the Girl Scouts of Kennedy Heights Senior Troop 141. She was also a teen model at McAlpin's department store . As a Walnut Hills High School student, she participated in Latin Club, French Club, Glee Club, Pep Club, and Student Council. Janice loved sports and was a founding member of The Girls Athletic Association where she played table tennis, volleyball and basketball. After her high school graduation, Janice attended Ohio University in Athens, OH, along with her childhood sweetheart, the late Henry William Glaspie III . The couple, who married in 1970, was blessed with a son, Henry Glaspie. In 1984 , Janice was also blessed with a second son, Robert Brown. She went on to graduate from The University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's degree in education.
Following her college graduation, Janice began her 30-year career as a teacher at Bramble Elementary School in Madisonville. When she retired, she maintained her involvement in education by becoming the principal/school administrator at East End Community Heritage School. In the spirit of sisterhood and service, Janice was initiated into The Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in the spring of 1982. She was an active member of the chapter and served in leadership roles. Janice was very influential in the education community. She regularly contributed and participated in tutoring and summer enrichment activities for children and worked for many years with her mom in the Summer Enrichment Program at Cincinnati Country Day School. Her teaching philosophies and methods were showcased in many articles in the Cincinnati Enquirer along with being featured in books on Community Teaching and Experiential Learning. In 2001, Janice was presented with the Applause! Magazine Imagemaker Award for Education. Janice had an extraordinary faith in God including during her last illness. God used her faith to strengthen and encourage those around her. She sang hymns, quoted scripture and praised God even on her hardest days.
Janice departed this world on December 24, 2021. She was preceded in death by her father, James A. Trice, Sr. with her mom, Marcella Trice , passing the following day. Her legacy will live on forever through her sons, Robert Brown of Cincinnati and Henry (Jessica) Glaspie of Orlando, FL; seven grandchildren; brothers, Markus (Barbara) Trice and James (Stephanie) Trice Jr.; and many other loving relatives and friends.
