Henry Lazenby Obituary

Celebrating His Life . . .
Henry Haynes "Hank" Lazenby, Sr. was born in Atlanta Georgia on March 2, 1921 , the first of three children born to Henry and Mary Haynes Lazenby. He departed this life on Aug. 26, 2016, surrounded by the love of his family.
Henry, affectionately called "Hank" by family and friends, grew up in Atlanta. His parents worked very hard to provide Hank and their two daughters with every available educational opportunity. For instance, Hank attended a Quaker school as a young child thanks to the generosity of one of his mother's cleaning clients. He proved to be an inspired student. As he grew older he often assisted his mother with her work and worked with his father in providing taxi service to Atlanta residents. Hank worked hard his entire life.
After graduating from high school, Hank attended Morris Brown College, which was located just several blocks from his home. He graduated from Morris Brown at the age of 21 with honors and a degree in Math. His 1942 college graduation was also a time when the nation was preparing for World War II.
He enlisted in the Army with three buddies. The four lads were told that they were going to serve together for the duration. They signed on the dotted line and headed off to Fort Benning. That promise lasted exactly 24 hours! They were split up almost immediately.
Hank was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps at Fort Benning, where he was responsible with matching the skills of incoming soldiers with the needs of various units. He also was charged with supplying these units. Eventually his unit was shipped overseas to serve in India. A largely segregated military also meant segregated support services provided by the Red Cross. It was in these black ,Red Cross units sent to the Indian Theater where Hank met Althea Heard. A romance blossomed in the shadows of the Himalayas. Hank and Althea were married November 13, 1946 in New York City at the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church.
He decided to use his GI bill benefits to attend Howard University, where he obtained a degree in engineering. During this time, Hank attended Howard and Althea worked for The Parks Service in the Department of Interior. The couple was blessed with one son, Henry (Chip) Lazenby Jr.
After graduation ,Hank was hired by General Electric as one of the pioneering black engineers. His initial assignments were in Lynn, Mass. and Schenectady, NY., Hank was then permanently assigned to Cincinnati's GE-Evendale plant. Hank, a resident of Cincinnati for over 60 years, was active in The Boy Scouts, Carmel Presbyterian Church and various social activities, including The Argus Club, and The Queen City Bridge Club. He was an avid golfer, an accomplished bridge player and world traveler. Hank traveled extensively throughout North and South America as well as Europe and Japan. He enjoyed visiting warm locations such as the Dominican Republic, Hawaii and Hilton Head . In 2003, Hank lost his wife Althea. However, it was not long before Hank began a wonderful "second act" by marrying Lucille Conliffe in the Dominican Republic.

Hank loved children and his second family was chock full of children. The whole family opened their arms to lovingly embrace him and welcome him to their large and loving family. He especially enjoyed travelling with Lucille to Washington DC to visit the Stephens family and their children. At the same time he maintained a special relationship with his own grandchild, Michael Lazenby, of Portland Oregon.
He also managed to infect Lucille with his love of travel. They took cruises around the world, including a trip from Brazil to the Mediterranean. The couple also traveled to Lucille's family reunions in Virginia and the two of them voyaged to the Pacific Northwest to visit Chip and his family as well as friends in Seattle. For several years they spent time in San Diego in the fall golfing and enjoying the warm fall weather as a last hurrah of summer.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Pearl Lazenby Taylor and Louise Lazenby Walden. His memory will forever be cherished by his wife Lucille Lazenby; his son, Henry and daughter-in-law, Lynette Lazenby of Portland, OR and grandson, Michael H. Lazenby. He will also be dearly missed by numerous nieces and nephews including Dr. Stephanie L. Heard, Kalamazoo Michigan and Ruth-Terry Walden of New York CityIn lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to:
