Cleora Crowdus Obituary

Celebrating Her Spirit . . . .
Mrs. Cleora Crowdus was born on May 9, 1912 in Union, South Carolina to the union of Nathaniel and Bessie Tucker. She departed this life on Saturday, May 6, 2017 into the arms of The Lord.
Mrs. Crowdus, one of 12 children, received her early education as a student of Union, South Carolina Public Schools. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. She was a member of Wyatt's Chapel A.M.E. Church in Union prior to moving to Cincinnati, Ohio.
She was united in holy wedlock to John Sanders. The couple joined The First Baptist Church of Walnut Hills when they moved from Union to Cincinnati. Mr. Sanders preceded her in death. She was blessed with meeting and later marrying James Crowdus. After her marriage to Mr. Crowdus, the couple joined Greater St. John AME Zion Church, under the pastoral of the late Rev. J.F. Dunn. Mr. Crowdus also preceded her in death. She enjoyed a long-standing friendship with Theodore Barton for many years.
Cleora Crowdus was elegant, meticulously dressed and a fiercely independent woman. She was an amazing housekeeper who maintained a place for everything and kept everything in its place. She loved to dress in pretty, long dresses. And on Sundays, she always entered church wearing a hat, gloves and high heels. Mrs. Crowdus also approached her volunteer work with the same sense of organization an attention to detail.

She was a devoted volunteer and long-standing member of Greater St. John, where she was appointed assistant superintendent and later superintendent of the Gleaners Board. She cherished her memories of working with the children's choir and washing their white robes herself so they would be the same white for choir performances. Mrs. Crowdus served the Gleaners Board for many years under six ministers. She was also active on the Beginners Department Board, Conference Worker, Stewardess Board No. #3, Pastoral Choir and a life-time member of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society. She continued to be a faithful member of Greater St. John until her health prohibited her from attending.
Mrs. Crowdus received numerous awards, recognitions and certificates of appreciation for her many years of dedication and faithful service throughout the years. Her contribution went far and beyond any expectation, which won her the "Ms. Saint John," crown for two consecutive years during the annual Women's Day.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, her 11 siblings and her beloved friend Theodore Barton. She leaves to cherish her memory, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, devoted friend Sandra Lynn, her church family and a host of other friends.
