Celebrating His Spirit

Billy L. Haggard was born in Lawley, Alabama on June 15, 1936 to the union of Menzo and Lenora. He surrendered to The Lord's call and departed this life on February 11, 2021.

He grew up in Lawley with his two brothers and seven sisters. In 1955 he graduated from Bibb County Training School and left his hometown to join the U.S. Navy where he served his country for four years, returned to Lawley after receiving his honorable discharge. Once home, Billy and his sweetheart, Annie Ruth Brown, married in 1961. Billy and Annie were blessed with a daughter, Bonita Ann Haggard

Billy and new family moved to Greensboro, N.C. , where they lived for nearly 10 years. He worked for the City of Greensboro, and became the first black supervisor in his department. He and Annie later moved to Cincinnati, seeking a regional change. Years later, Billy was also blessed with a second daughter, Angela Haggard and a son, Lemorse Lewis.

His move to Cincinnati opened an opportunity for employment at Jewish Hospital. Billy, a gifted mechanic and carpenter, held several jobs in Cincinnati as a carpenter. In his spare time, he loved to restore old cars and work on motorcycles. He was also passionate about riding motorcycles and fishing. Billy, blessed with a green thumb, loved to spend time in his garden, cultivating his tomatoes, collard greens and apple trees. He loved The Lord andremained a life-long member of Union Baptist Church of Lawley.

In 1985, Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Ruth Haggard; his daughter, Bonita Ann Haggard on Feb 1, 1997 and his sister, Bernice H. Smith.

His loving spirit will forever be cherished by his children, Angela Haggard and Lamorse Lewis; siblings, Louise Richardson of Colorado Springs, JoAnn Wilkerson of Colorado, Springs, Geraldine (L.C.) Alexander, Edith M. (James) Boone, Frances(Al Dailey Jr.) Geter of Stafford, Va. and Earner Fenderson, Buffalo, N.Y.; David (Donna) Haggard of Montevallo, AL., Menzo Haggard of West Bloomfield, Michigan, grandchildren, Andrea (Brandon)Jackson, Navea Stanford, Montez Milner, Jasmine Duke, Alexis Lewis,Ayana Colvin, Lamah Grant, Raniaha and Raven Carter, Lamorse Lewis Jr. RaShan Mosley, Jacqueline Coleman; Great-grandchildren, Iyon, Iunisty, Iteyan, Idreeis and Idonnous Davis, Rilly Shy Bryant, Ayile Bonitra Pickens, Pharaoh Brown, Chiya Reed and Asha Milner, Amari and Anaya Dukes, Kyllian James Scott Dukes, Darius Mosely, De'Asia Crutchfield, Derrick Crutchfield II, Chris'Jen Dickey, Janiya Coburn, DaQuan Crutchfield, Layla Crutchfield, Devin Coleman. He will also be dearly missed by a host of other family and friends he touched throughout his journey.
