Johnnie "Jack" Hatchet was the only child of Mary Oliver (Franklin). He was born in Selma, Alabama and graduated from Selma's Public School System. In 1945 Jack relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio from Selma, Alabama.
Jack started working in the construction field, where he became a union trustee. He met the love of his life, Mildred Snowden of Monroeville, Alabama. Mildred was vacationing in Cincinnati, Ohio visiting her family. They had a long distance relationship for three years. They were married on March 25, 1950 at New St. Paul Baptist Church, in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were married 64 years. To this union they were blessed with three wonderful sons, Frederick Hatchet, Norman Hatchet and Jeffery Hatchet (who preceded him in death).
In 1966, Jack left the construction field and was employed at General Motors in Sharonville, Ohio. He worked in the warehouse and retired from GM in 1997. Jack was a handy man, a do-it-yourself man. He made all the repairs under the roof on the Lincoln Avenue house. This included him adding a front porch to the house. He also built a three bedroom house for his son Jeff in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He then constructed an additional three bedrooms to Jeff's house. Jack was an avid gardener, fisherman and Bid Whist card player. He was a big fan of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. Back in the day Jack made some very good Cherry Wine.
Jack accepted Christ at an early age. He was a long time member of New St. Paul Baptist Church. He later joined Brown Chapel AME Church in 1964.
He leaves to mourn his passing: A devoted wife of 64 years Mildred Hatchet; two sons Frederick Hatchet and Norman Hatchet, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; two special cousins William Franklin, Jr. and Dorothy Taylor, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brother-in-laws Jewel McCreary and Robert Randle, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; and a host of other relatives and friends.
