Life's Reflection
Joan Monroe Stockdale was born on July 28, 1932 in Covington, Kentucky to the union of Opal and Lonis Monroe, Sr. She departed this life peacefully on October 2, 2016 in the comfort of her home.
Joan grew up in Covington and attended Lincoln Grant School. She graduated from Morristown High School in Tennessee. She later attended Cincinnati State College. Joan joined First Baptist Church of Covington early in her life. She was a devoted member of the church and a long-standing member of the First Baptist Usher Board. Joan was united in holy matrimony to James Stockdale. James and Joan were married for 10 years before his passing. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dicky.
Joan was employed at the V.A. Medical Center, where she was a supervisor in the Dietary Department for 28 years. She was a dedicated employee and she also worked several part-time jobs to provide for her family. However she also took time out to enjoy family and friends.
She was a very active and long-time member of the Elks Club. She loved sports and regularly attended her grandchildren's' football and basketball games. Joan, their biggest fan, wore their perspective school colors to their games and earned a reputation for ringing her cow bell. She loved creating arts and crafts and designed beautiful flower arrangements. Joan was also skilled at painting lovely ceramic pottery. She was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining in her home.
Joan was known to be an amazing mother to her children and she was also a second mother to several other children in her family and neighborhood.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Larry (Rita) Monroe, Sheila (Ronald) Coleman, Phyllis Weaver (Floyd Grace ) and Joy (Anthony) Wallace. Her loving spirit will also be cherished by 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of close family and friends.
