Helen Settle Obituary

Helen Settle...Reflections of Life
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say
of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortressНѕ my GodНѕ in Him will I trust.
Psalms 91:12
On Friday, September 9, in the year of our Lord, 2016, a trumpet sounded and the heavenly choir sang praises as one of their own, Helen (Vida) Settle, returned home after 96 years, 11 months and two weeks of touching the hearts and lives of many on this earthly plain.

Helen (Vida) Starr was born on October 4, 1919 in Lafollette, Tennessee to the union of Frank and Hattie Starr. Helen, the fifth of seven children, reigned as the Starr family matriarch for many years after the deaths of her six siblings. She is the last of that Starr family generation. Yet Helen has left us memories to share with generations to come.

Helen moved to Cincinnati with her family as a four -month- old infant. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized at the age of eight at Providence Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Pastor Zanders. She joined the church choir at the age of 14 and began singing with the female quartet, "The Jolly Jubilees," a year later. During her membership with the Jubilees, she met the late Rev. J.C. Wynn, who served as the group's mentor and manager for a time. Her participation in the Jubilees also led to the introduction of Curtis "Skinny" Settle. After a period of courting, Helen and Curtis married on Nov. 4, 1942. The Settles enjoyed 49 and a half years of marriage prior to the passing of Curtis.

Their union was blessed with four daughters, Claudette (Penny) , Hattie, Joyce and Barbara. Helen's niece, Jackolyn, joined the family after the passing of her mother and was raised as a daughter. Helen often spoke about how her family survived the Great Depression in 1929. She also talked about her family's survival of Cincinnati's 1937 "Great Flood." Helen was a very active member of Providence Baptist Church under the leadership of a number of pastors. She sang in the choir and served on the trustee and missionary boards. Helen enjoyed visiting sick church members in their homes. She cooked, cleaned and did whatever chores necessary to help members who were not able to do for themselves.

Granddaddy Curtis and Grandma Helen made their home at 2248 Loth Street a refuge for all of their grandchildren who would come to visit almost every weekend and summers. The grandchildren stayed for a long as they wanted...or until Helen said it was time for "everyone" to go home. In just a few days she would call to see when they were coming back!! The house at 2248 Loth Street holds a lot of memories for her grandkids and their
friends.
In 2010 , Providence Baptist Church experienced financial difficulty. Helen and other members could not find any information on how the situation could be resolved. The doors of the church, and its adjoining apartment building, were locked up, chained and a for-sale sign placed on the property. Helen, a member of Providence since childhood, was very disappointed over the incidents that caused her church building to be closed. She began attending Morning Star Baptist Church. After hearing that Providence would probably never reopen, she joined Morning Star under her Christian experience on Sunday, August 15, 2010 under the leadership of Pastor Calvin A. Harper.

Helen worshipped at Morning Star until she decided to move to Thompsons Station, Tennessee in May of 2012 to live with her daughter, Claudette and son-in-law, Rev. Albert Cole. Helen joined her children to worship at Duplex Original Church of God, where Rev. Albert, served as pastor. She attended regularly with her family until her health began to fail. Helen continued to send her offerings and ask about Duplex church members. Helen was not one to complain. When asked how she was doing her response was, "I'm blessed, taking a pill, saying a prayer and keep on pushing." Helen was a Godly woman and a wonderful example for anyone.

She was a blessing and a gift from God who will be sorely missed by many. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis SettleНѕ parents, Frank and Hattie StarrНѕ two sisters, Mary Clellie Robinson and Ola Mae StarrНѕ four brothers, William, James, Charles and Luke Starr and their wivesНѕ her daughter, Hattie (Stanley) Hankerson Нѕ son-in-law, Robert FearsНѕ a granddaughter, Stephanie Cromwell and her husband; one great-granddaughter, Tondeleah Hankerson. Her loving spirit will always be treasured and remembered by her daughters, Claudette Penny (Rev. Albert) Cole Sr., Joyce Phillips, Barbara (James) Carr, Jackolyn FearsНѕ granddaughters, Kimberly (David) Montgomery, Shanetta (Prince) Jackson, Leticia K. Estill, Demetria Lear, Kiesha (James) Brown and Amber FearsНѕ grandsons, Curtis T. Settle, Nelson (Rose) Rodney, Charles N.
